Mycocycle, Inc., a 2022 finalist for the Ray of Hope Prize, is taking on a massive industrial challenge by working with fungi to break down construction waste, such as used asphalt shingles. Their decomposition technology takes what would otherwise have been landfilled and turns it back into a usable feedstock for other construction products like drywall or insulation. By learning from and working with fungi, they are enabling a circular construction economy.
This is the first of ten videos created by the Biomimicry Institute to highlight the finalist teams' technologies. The Institute is now accepting applications for the 2023 program. If you know of any innovative startups or technologies, please send them along!
