Innovation Inspired by Our Oceans

Reprinted from the Ocean Exchange

We have a lot to learn from our oceans, especially about how to reverse and mitigate the impacts of climate change. Project Drawdown points to the oceans tremendous potential for our future energy production through offshore wind turbines and tidal / wave energy. Perhaps even more importantly is the massive amount of carbon that our oceans can naturally sequester, usually captured by phytoplankton, kelp, and other marine plants during photosynthesis. We are inspired by those addressing environmental issues by using and supporting these methods, but at the Biomimicry Institute we go one step further. Instead of utilizing nature, we learn from nature to mimic the way it achieves various functions.
