I usually write this blog on Mondays. In a normal week, I mosey on down to my local coffee shop on Monday morning, sidle up to the counter, order some variation of espresso mixed with steamed milk, and write. It’s an enjoyable routine, pleasantly punctuated by conversations with the baristas and friendly greetings from other usuals.
But sometimes Monday mornings decide to be busy. On those days, I adjust my schedule with polite deference. Trust me, of all the days, you do not want to get in a fight with Monday. Monday will wreck you.
And so I begin to write in the evening hours. It makes for a longer night, but it comes with a silver lining – I get to justifiably drink beer while “working”! In this case, the beer is a local graham cracker stout from Kennesaw, Georgia (Burnt Hickory Brewery does good work).
If you haven’t figured it out by now, I’m rambling because I have no clue what to write about on this particular Monday evening.
Which, to be honest, is absolutely fine. So what if I have writer’s block? It’s raining outside, the lights are dim at my beer-serving coffee shop, quiet music sets a gentle mood, and four women are enthusiastically playing Scrabble about ten feet away. I’m enjoying every bit of tonight.
Thinking back, I originally started this blog as an exploration of environmentally-conscious living. Usually, I emphasize the “environmentally-conscious” piece of that statement. Tonight, I’m going to focus on the “living” part. And life is good.
That’s why I treasure nights like tonight. They make life worth our efforts to be environmentally conscious, which is fundamentally a human cause. We seek environmental sustainability so that the full spectrum of the human experience can exist for generations to come. And tonight, I’m fortunate enough to experience the human joys of beer, rain storms and enthusiastic women playing Scrabble.
So if you need another New Year’s resolution, try this one on for size: celebrate sustainability by embracing the human experience. Make time for simple moments. Seek happiness. Love the people you love even more, and find reasons to smile. I promise you won’t regret any of that.
And if you have writer’s block and are facing a deadline, try pouring yourself a beer.
